1. When is enrollment starting for Academic Year 2017-18?
Open Enrollment Period for Academic Year 2017-2018 is on hold due to facility challenges. We are currently in negotiation with a potential site and our open enrollment state may change rapidly. We highly encourage attending an Info Session to learn about the programming offered at Wei Yu. We will schedule more Info Sessions as soon as we finalize our location. Please subscribe to our mailing list to get all the updates about the school.
2. What grades will you be enrolling for Academic Year 2017-2018?
We will enroll K and 1st grades for the Academic Year 2017-2018.
3. Who can apply for admission?
Wei Yu is open to all residents of California.
4. If I live within the Moreland School District boundary, will my child get preference in the lottery?
Wei Yu will be located within the Moreland School District boundary. In the event that at the close of the Open Enrollment Period, the number of applicants exceeds the slots available, a Public Random Drawing will be conducted. Moreland residents will be given priority in the lottery. To be eligible for the lottery and priority, applications must be received by the end of the Open Enrollment window.
5. Is there a fee or tuition to attend Wei Yu?
No, as a public charter school, there are no fees to apply and no tuition for attending Wei Yu International Charter School.
6. Does my child need to know any Mandarin?
Students may enter Wei Yu at Kindergarten or First grade with no previous Mandarin exposure or any level of Mandarin proficiency.
7. Will I need to attend an information session to apply to the school?
We strongly recommend attending a Parent Information Meeting so you can learn more about the programming offered at Wei Yu and make sure it will be a good match for your family. However, the information sessions are not mandatory.
8. What is the cut off age and date for entering Kindergarten?
The California Department of Education has shifted the Kindergarten cutoff date from December to September. For the Academic Year 2017-2018, a child must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2017 to enter Kindergarten.
9. Will Wei Yu be adding higher grades in the future? Can I enroll my older (Second Grade and above in 2017-2018) student?
The current plan is to add only Kindergarten classes each year. For Academic Year 2017-2018, we plan to enroll at least 2 Kindergarten classes and at least 1 First Grade class. The next year after, these classes will become our First and Second Grade classes and we will add new Kindergarten classes.
10. If I submit an application and/or enroll my child at Wei Yu, can I change my mind?
Yes. As at any public school, you are entitled to withdraw your child at any time. Filling out and returning an application or Enrollment Packet does not commit you to a decision. However, once you withdraw or decline a spot at Wei Yu, you will automatically be removed from Wei Yu's attendance (or wait list) and the spot offered to the next waiting family. Your child cannot be dis-enrolled from his/her current school until you have been offered, completed and submitted ALL enrollment forms by the due date in mid-April, AND have accepted a spot at Wei Yu. After all enrollment documents have been received, Wei Yu will need to work with your current school to transfer any applicable student files. If you reside out of district, there is no advanced district-to-district notice required. If your child is accepted, Wei Yu will contact your local school district once all enrollment documents have been received AND you have accepted a spot at Wei Yu. Please apply per the application process.
11. If I find out about Wei Yu after the Enrollment Period (or after the Lottery) can I still submit an application?
Yes. Wei Yu will accept applications after the end of open enrollment. If by the close of open enrollment, the number of application forms received is less than the number of spaces available, all applicants will be accepted and enrolled in the school, upon submission of an enrollment packet. Subsequent application forms received after open enrollment closes will be accepted until capacity is reached. If the number of applications received during open enrollment exceeds slots available, we will conduct a Random Public Drawing. In the event of a Random Public Drawing, applications received after open enrollment will be placed at the end of the wait list in the order received.
